Oladejo Olaleye amassed and astronomical amount of points last year. We had a very good turn out on day 1. Your humble webmaster believed reigning All Play All champion Oladejo Olaleye had vacated to New pastures content at being a great Champion. Champion Ola however saw the website had and trekked to Wolverhampton to exclaim he intends to wants to defend his crown. Oladejo already probably leads as he notched up two impressive wins against Gordon Sands! The first night was more exciting than a Pro wrestling match and there's much more to come. Watch this space, read updates soon and full standings by Dave Wightman, organiser and participant.

Club Buzzer/Lightning Chess: Thurs 03 Feb 2011. Wow so excited to announce this. This event is not to be missed. League Lightning popular but lets find out who's the fastest at our club as we try to emulate electrons!
A long advertised, promoted and eagerly awaited popular event. Well it was the fantastic fun filled night of chess I anticipated and more! Robert Marshall proved to be the most enlightened one over the chess board and conceded just half a point! A clear and massive 1.5 points gulf separated Rob from 2nd place. Actually, our two higher graded participants were beaten into 2nd place with 5/7 2nd= Mike Townsend, Dave Wightman, Mike Griffiths and Bob Khoshnevis. A number of members achieved 4/7.
In all sixteen entrants contested the first Buzzer/Lightning Tournament
to be held at the club since April 2008. In 2008 the event represented WDCL League team lightning. This time we just had club lightning; individual tournament. The consensus
was that it was a great success. It was a night full of drama, with dramatic
sacrifices, unexpected checkmates and more than a few lost
pieces and swindles, all against a backdrop of friendly
rivalry. Congratulations to Rob Marshall on a fine performance,
and special thanks to Peter Broomhall for hosting the
event and organising the pairings and most of all for the buzzer loan.
Will Rob Marshall prevail in our Spring Quickplay and shall one of our other members demonstrate their Chess prowess and strength.
Autumn Quickplay: Thurs 30 Sept 2010 : 15 mins all moves. Commences 7.30pm.
What a fantastic fun filled night of great Chess. Some epic battles, some beautiful chess, elegant positions and even laughter due to some hilarious positions.
The first event of the club's winter programme kicked off in style with the Autumn Quickplay, a five round Swiss event. Highlights of the evening were Paul Walters unintentionally making an illegal move whilst fighting for a draw against Frank Wood. Paul did prevail. Also, Dave Wightman managing to cling on until his opponent's flag fell when left with just a knight and pawn against a knight, bishop and five pawns, Paul Walters' "inspired" knight move from c3 to b4 to win back a crucial pawn and achieve a draw, and competition debuts for Jacob Mcauliffe, Gaynor Turner and Hi. All of the debutants scored good results and should be congratulated. Well done all and especially to Dave Wightman on another awesome display of Chess prowess! Thanks to Steve Wilson for organising the event. By Dave Wightman (editor's comments) Can Dave Wightman retain his title in the Spring Quickplay? Will anyone even score a draw!
A full score table here Autumn Quickplay Score Table
Dave Wightman 1st place 5/5 Champion.
Dave Daniels 2nd 3.5 points(with 0.5 point Bye in round 1).
A number of players joint 3rd: Bob Khoshnevis, Paul Walters, Peter Pearson-Jones and Max Wooton.
Event News (theme): Team Chess taster 19 Aug 2010. It's Chess but not quite as we know it. 2 teams of 2 compete. Tremendous pre season fun and great experience.
Spring Quickplay News: Thurs 10 March 2011: Well it would certainly be an interesting night with Dave Wightman playing Lee Collier not being able to retain his Autumnal Quickplay crown. What a night it turned out to be though. Some great games and a new club champ. Colin Haughton 1st place . Well done Colin on prevailing due to an excellent performance! 2nd Gordon Sands 3.5/5, 3rd = 3/5 Peter Pearson Jones, Paul Walters, Bob Khoshnevis, Ola Olaleye, Richard Dawson, John Hunt all with 3/5. Unfortunately Paul had to abandon his game against Bob Khoshnevis as his transport arrived. What a fantastic fun filled night of torrid battles. Many thanks to Steve Wilson for organising and pairings. Dave Wightman shouldn't feel too bad about missing this event as he beat Lee Collier in his Rock Cup Semi final. Frank Wood v Dave Pritchard is adjourned. Well done Dave and Frank.
Well done Colin Haughton Spring Quickplay winner! An Excellent 4/5 points secures Spring Quickplay title 10/03/11. More details and writeup in Club Events Section.
Simul 02 Sept 2010: Dave Wightman held a simul. The event was advertised as not to be missed. Very exciting to have a simul at Wolverhampton Chess Club. Dave Wightman took on 13 players at our club in a simul. But the Simul was no ordinary simul and Dave conceded his white advantage in every game by letting his opponents chose colour! Not even a GM does that but Dave said himself he wanted games to be fun.Dave still won the vast majority of games 8.5- 4.5. Peter Pearson Jones, Paul Walters won with the white pieces, Barry Lewis also won, Frank Wood, Gordon Sands and Roma drew.
Great an enjoyable evening. Well done all and especially to Dave Wightman.
A Great and enjoyable evening 04/03/10: A well attended event and very enjoyable evening. Congratulations to Dave Wightman for achieving 1st place with 5/5 and to Peter Jones runner up. A batch of players came joint 3rd with 3/5. Well done to all and thank you to all who turned up to Steve Wilson (organiser) and much gratitude to Peter Broomhall for doing a great job of pairings and comparing.
Forthcoming Club Events: A date in July: Team Chess Event 15 mins all moves (7:30pm start). A 5 round Swiss individual tournament event.
