About Our Club

The club provides opportunities for playing chess socially and competitively. Wolverhampton Chess Club run teams in the Birmingham, Cannock, Dudley and Wolverhampton leagues. Hon. Sec for our club is Barry Lewis, Tel: (01922) 479845.

The Chess Club meets at 7.30 - 11.00pm on Thursdays at Wolverhampton West End Working Men's Club, Merridale Street West, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, WV3 ORW. All are welcome irrespective of chess level or aspirations. Play chess socially or league chess. Juniors and beginners are welcome to attend our club.

In the Summer months we run an A and B team in the Wolverhampton Summer league in divisions 2 and 3 respectively and a combined team with Walsall Kipping called Wolvsall in Division 1.

Wolverhampton Chess Club Awarded club of the year title 2007 by Staffordshire Chess Association.

Wolverhampton Summer League 2008 Champions of Division 3 South.

Venue and Facilities

Venue: Our club facilities include a spacious, quiet playing area. A licensed bar is on the premises too which is accessible via an adjoining corridor from the playing area.

Wheelchair symbol A ramp into the club for wheelchair users and once inside venue is flat.

Carpark symbol Spacious car park opposite the club.

Wolverhampton Show UPDATE:

What a fantastic weekend we all had. Great fun for all who attended and played friendlies.

A Great successful event. Wonderful to experience outdoor Chess at the Wolverhampton Show and to be a part of this huge event!

Thank you to all who turned up, helpers, players,the Wolverhampton show wouldn’t have been a success without members and key members such as Barry Lewis, Richard Dawson, Gordon Sands, Paul Walters and Steve Wilson (all subcommittee).  All helped during the weekend as well as Frank Wood, Mike Townsend, Max Wooton, Bob Khoshnevis, Colin Haughton, Mike Steed.  Ray Dolan of SCA did an excellent job on both days supporting us with promotion and playing public.   Also Peter Broomhall’s attendance on Sunday much appreciated!  

Thank you all and to the many members of the public who played Chess games with us. A great Team effort!!!

We hope to see you soon at our club every Thursday evening.

Victories : Shifnal & Telford 5.5-2.5 and not losing on a single board! Stourbridge and halesowen in the Final.

09/08/08 Most of our Summer League B championship winning team met at our club to be photographed by the Express & Star for a feature. The feature and photograph appeared in the Express & Star 11/08/08 on page 15 and Wolverhampton Chronicle Thurs 14/08/08 on page 3.

Wolverhampton Summer League Awards and Quickplay 07/08/08:

Congratulations to Paul Walters of Wolverhampton for winning the U110 section with 4.5 points out 5. Conceding just 0.5 points in round 5 to A Hussain (Warley Quinborne)who shared =2nd place with Bob Brodie(Bushbury).

Also congratulations to Wolverhampton's Frank Wood for winning the Major (110+) and to Alf Schroeder (Bushbury) 2nd place runner up.

WDCL Lightning Chess event held at our club 24/04/08

None of our 4 teams won but Paul Walters achieved joint 1st place in the Minor section by scoring 5 out of 6, 4 wins 2 draws.

Club Fees

At our AGM 28 May 2009.

Club subscriptions increase from £35 to £45 for full members and £33 for juniors, unemployed, and pensioners but with a reduction to £40 (full members) and £30 (juniors, unemployed, and pensioners) where payment is received by 31st Sept 2009.

  50% discounted membership for new members.

 

Also concessions for students.

 

Note: Anyone can visit a few times for free. No pressure to join. If you like our club you're welcome to become a Wolverhampton Chess Club member.
